How consistent and impactful are your one-on-one meetings? How does your personality affect your approach to these meetings? Reflect on the questions below.
- CONSISTENCY? Ideally, you should meet with each team member every one to two weeks; canceling them should be a rare occurrence. How consistent are your O3s? Do you cancel them with little notice? What prevents you from scheduling O3s?
- WHOSE AGENDA IS IT? The O3 is for your team member to connect, ask questions, present challenges, and to share ideas. People who are a C or D type in the DISC system, or have high “conscientiousness” in the Big 5 personality model, often want to drive the agenda and turn it into a status meeting. Are you letting the other person drive the agenda? Are you leaving status for another time, or at least until the end of the meeting? Why or why not?
- WHO DOES MORE OF THE TALKING? People who are an I or S type in the DISC system, or have high “extroversion” in the Big 5 personality model, often enjoy talking and might not be as strong at listening. Who does most of the sharing and talking in your O3s? Do you give the other person plenty of time to share?
