The Controlling dimension measures how you establish a sense of personal security and worth through task accomplishment, personal achievement, power, and control. The Controlling dimension comprises four subscales: Perfect, Driven, Ambition, and Autocratic. Each of these is inversely correlated with most of the Creative dimensions.
This week, focus on one or more behaviors that will decrease your Controlling dimension. Consider these ideas:
- To reduce your perfectionism, review the goals and expectations you’ve set for team members–are they too high?
- To reduce the extent to which you are in overdrive, choose something to say “no” to; be realistic about what you can take on.
- To reduce your negative ambition, seek to say less in meetings and listen more; highlight and acknowledge others' contributions.
- To reduce your autocratic dimension, seek to share extra information with team members to give them additional context, even if they don’t explicitly need the information for the performance of their jobs.
