The Complying dimension measures the extent to which you get a sense of self-worth and security by complying with the expectations of others rather than acting on what you intend and want. The Complying dimension comprises four subscales: Conservative, Pleasing, Belonging, and Passive. Each of these is inversely correlated with most of the Creative dimensions.
This week, focus on one or more behaviors that will decrease your Complying dimension. Consider these ideas:
- To reduce your conservative trait, reflect on how following rules, regulations, and procedures precisely as written may actually hurt the organization in some way.
- To reduce your people-pleasing trait, consider if you’ve been withholding constructive feedback from certain team members because you are worried about how they might react.
- To reduce your need for belonging and conformity, speak up and challenge an idea or decision (assuming you actually disagree with it) even if it will be unpopular.
- To reduce your passivity and increase your power, look for opportunities to make a decision or take an action without seeking prior approval from your manager.
