One way to focus on developing others is to look at the full inventory of capabilities of your team. What new skills would balance out the team? What skills will be needed tomorrow?
Consider these questions:
- Thinking about your entire team’s capabilities, what knowledge or skills are they currently missing that would enhance their performance?
- Thinking about your entire team’s capabilities, what knowledge or skills will they need in the years ahead to maintain their performance?
- Thinking about your entire team’s capabilities, are there any “soft skills” they are lacking? Is there any industry knowledge they would benefit from?
