Leaders who are “results-focused” focus on specific outcomes rather than the process to get there. Being results-focused includes behaviors for aligning team members' skills to tasks required to achieve objectives.
This short self-assessment will help you to identify your current results-focused behaviors and can identify areas for improvement.
Answer YES or NO to each statement below, keeping track of your total yes responses.
- Are you able to recite your and your team’s objectives for the month, quarter, and year?
- Do you know what your number one task for the week is?
- Do you talk to your team, colleagues, or manager about progress against goals?
- Do you expect to be held accountable for results? Do you hold others accountable for results?
- Review your calendar for the previous seven days. Did you invest enough hours in making progress toward your number one goal?
- Have you thought about obstacles or roadblocks to achieving your goals? Have you thought about how to handle them?
- Do you accept responsibility for your team’s performance when communicating with your supervisor (i.e., you don’t blame others when things go wrong)?
- Do you strive to achieve your goals ahead of schedule, or beyond the expectations of your manager?
Interpreting Results
How many YES answers do you have?
- If your total number of YES answers is less than 4, you should prioritize improving your results-focused behaviors.
- If your total number of YES answers is 5 or 6, you are likely focusing on results but have room for improvement.
- If your total number of YES answers is 7 or higher, you are strong in results-focused behaviors.
Review your “no” answers to identify areas for improvement.
